Buying a crappie mold?advice needed?

ok i am in the market for a crappie jig mold to pour my own jigs with. i want to start out with one mold for now to get started. i pretty much have all the stuff i need to heat up the lead and pour with just need mold and hooks.

what should i buy?? barbed non barbed? collar? no collar? i i've seen some video's on youtube tied with a bared jig and some without a collar?

is this ok to use for tying ? and use bare with plastics .

If you use a lot of plastics, this mold is good. For tying jigs, most people use a barbless head. You can use the barbless with plastics, too. If you are wanting mostly jig heads to tie jigs, I would reccomend the barbless heads.

I buy all my molds with the barb. You can always trim the barb off if you don't want it for a certain application. However if you buy it barbless, then you are not going to get a barb on the jig if you want one, unless you modify the mold. It's easier to take off barbs on a jig, then to modify a mold later. JMO

I have that mold and yes you can make it do double duty. Leave the collar and barb on for using plastics and cut the collar off for use in tying hair jigs.
Make sure you buy a pair of the lead gate shears as they really help in getting the collars off clean.

Now if you're going to buy two molds you can buy one with collar and one without collar.

Seems like a lot of work and time to cut off the barbs (at least for me who has a side business selling jigs). Plus when you're talking about 1/32nd oz, you're losing as much lead as you leave when you cut the barb off.

I'd get a collarless mold if you want to tie, barbed if you use plastics. If you don't want to buy two, buy whichever you will use more then buy poured heads from someone. If you'll go through a lot of both, I'd go ahead and get 2 molds.

Everyone here has great points. I actually have both molds but do not sell my jigs. Only make them for my buddies and myself.
When I pour, I normally pour the jigs with the collar because I tie some and use plastics also. Like the wise man said, you can remove the collar a lot easier and quicker than trying to change a collarless jig to handle plastics. You can use glue on collarless jigs and plastics, but in a bouncing, wind driven boat, I sometimes get more glue on my finger than the jig.

base it on what you use the most if your wanting a jig to tye with then no collor if plastic with one if you do both well get one the does a few sizes with and another that does a few sizes with out
