As I dont' have a dedicated tying room in my house I have to unpack, tie like crazy, clean up then put it all away. When I sit in my chair in the living room I use a fold out table from Wal-Mart that cost maybe $20, it's all wood.

I bought an extra Thompson vise on ebay and it came with a pedestal base so I took my Dyna-King Kinfisher and tried it in the base and it fit perfect. So I've gone to using that. Before I just clamped it to the table.

You can buy pedestal base's on ebay that are real heavy if you want to go that route. Sorry no way to take pictures.

I have a stupid question, I have tied jigs off and on (mostly off ) since
the late 70's. I probably bought my first vise from Herter's ( anybody
    remember them ? )
Now for the stupid question , I just bought a new vise that looks
remarkably like the one in the above picture. What is the long wire arm with
the crook at the end used for ?

    thanks

That is a bobbin rest. I guess your vise is a rotary? You can hang your bobbin over that little thing on the end and then you can turn your vise to wrap things like the chenille or hackle for palmered (SP) hackle or wire ribbing. It's easier to wrap some of these by holding the material and turning the vise and when you do that and have the thread hung over the bobbin rest it will not keep wrapping around the hook shank.

Hope I didn't just confuse you.

If I did let me know and I will try again to help.

In my pic there are 2 vises the one in front of my tying station is the Nor Vise and to the right of that is my Renzetti Saltwater Traveler. I use to have the Traveler clamped onto a wood piece that is now removed from that tying station since I got the Nor.

All my materials are behind and to the left side of me with the right side is my computer.

Right now my area is way messy and needs cleaning up some, LOL!

LOL, I kind of figured someone may ask that. I have 32 counting the kind that are sitting on the board that you can barely see. You can see the Fl Fire Orange as it kind of stands out.

Also have one auto bobbin from Nor-Vise with 13 spools I think. This bobbin is really cool and I use it a lot on flies where I use the bobbin rest a lot. As you can see the vise is about 14" to the right of the thread post that is a separate piece and not attached to the vise shaft as most bobbin rest are. The auto bobbin will rewind the thread after it has been put over that post. This allows for the most use of a rotating vise of any other one I have seen. I can actually spin a hook or jig head very fast with wrapping stuff. It is great for a fast thread base.

I think this video shows some of what this vise is about...
    http://www.youtube.com/norvise

Keep in mind this vise and bobbin with at least one conversion jaw is pretty high cost. However I have to say Norm Norlander is one of the nicest people I ever dealt with.

You really should check out these videos as you can see the difference in this vise and all others. I also have the Renzetti sitting right there next to the Nor and it was about $200 it self and is a great vise, but can not do what the Nor can.

Skip, that is a really neat (And huge) work station. I use four bobbins (3 ceramic and 1 starter that I never could part with from when I started). Are your order files logged in to the computer? I use a spreadsheet to track all orders from start to finish as well as for financial record keeping.
