    Default Duck and Turkey Feathers

I was wondering if anyone uses feathers from ducks and turkeys? If so which one do you use?I am real new to tieing my on jigs.My wife runs a taxidermy shop for birds and I am interested in using some of the feathers that she dont use on some birds or if the bird is not in good enough shape to mount I was going to use what she dont.Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey Crappietime,

I use the Marabou almost 95% of the time. Attached is a thread on how I got started and one on some fly tying videos. I promise you, that once you get started tying it will be so much fun and like an addiction to you.

Squirrel tails and red fox tails are great too. If you have extra marabou, squirrel or red fox, shoot me a PM and send it to me. Don't throw it away.

Thanks Ship I went to BassPro and got one of them jig tieing kits and done used up all the stuff in there kit and ordered alot from Jann's Netcraft. But the other day when the wife was fleshing a mallard duck she tore it up pretty bad so I thought humm feathers...I used the marribou and bucktails that was with my kit and then dug in the freezer found some deer tails and used them.I got an old polar bear hide in my father in laws attic that is tanned and has been there forever but still in good shape thinking about trying it out.Heck I got a red heeler dog outside I been looking at her hair to cut some and make a jig out of.

    Dog hair is awesome.

My dog has a weird-looking tail for at least the first few weeks of every crappie season. :D

Turkey feathers are used a good bit in fly tying. Duck feathers as well are used a lot in fly tying, but there should be plenty of feathers you can use with jigs on the duck.

Crappietime, that polar bear hide you got, cut a bunch of 4 inch squares out including the hide and die them all the colors you like. You might not have to bleach the hair if its white enough. Same with your deer tails, works great.

Turkey is almost exclusively used for tying Muddler Minnows and some grasshopper patterns. Duck wing feathers are used for tying wings on dry flies, and flanks for streamer patterns. Goose biots, though not related to your post, for Prince Nymphs.

For crappie I'd say use your imagination.

Thanks for the info all we just mounted a young goose today and it had alot of feathers come out as the wife was picking and making sure it looked good.So I am going to head into the kitchen and get my stuff out and just tie one or two up and try them in the aquarium and see how they look.
