Agree with smooth you control the length by cutting before tying and the short strikes will take care of them selves.

I really don't personally worry about the length as much as some people and have not really had any issues with short strikes that much. I guess if you made it really long then it may become a issue, but I never have and some of mine are pretty long. The only time I have really noticed short strikes was fishing for bass using top water baits and buzz baits. Then I have seen trouble and needed a trailer hook.

Here is one that is kind of long and I have no reservations about using it just as is...

I tied these last night ,im not sure if they have enough feathers ,but i think i was using a little too much before .

Thanks BamaMan that is one of my new sparkle jigs. Actually they look better in person because it's hard so capture the body sparkles so they look like they do here in my hand.

Have you considered putting some chenille for a body? Or even just using red thread for the neck as I would call your jigs thread neck style which is fine and they should catch fish. I have customers that like a thread neck style using bucktail and I am sure they do well catching fish, I know they do actually.

Yes, i do some with the chenille but not many with just thread i need to experiment i guess .The 1 on the upper left is 1/16 oz with blue chenille.

Yes I see that one, but I was mainly talking about the others and should have said that. Sorry about that!

I guess that when it comes to marabou jigs I seem to like a chenille body and when I use hair then I go to a thread neck most of the time.

Anyway it's just a matter of what you like than then the final word comes from the crappie. After all that is the goal huh?

Jon those are some good looking jigs. I tie real short tailed jigs and like them. They have a good action in the water. A long tail is good when fish are real aggressive and taking all of the jig then the shorter tail is good for real light bite crappies that aren't aggressive. Try a long tail like you have and a short tail. I do waste some marabou to get the the length and from the way I use it. Here is a pic of how my tails are.

It seems you are tying in the hole feather and then cutting it to the length you want and it will not be necessary if you cut it to length after tearing it off the quill.

Skip are you taking the feathers from the bottom part of the quill, or does it not matter where on the quill you pull them from. Also when you tie them on are you looking for a thinner and more sporadic than just cutting the end off the marabo? Hopefully this makes some since.
