Just tie a loop of 12# mono on the shaft and let it hang off the back. Tie your pattern. Pull loop over body tie off at eye with several wraps and whip finish.

I had a bumble bee deer hair fly that is tied with one mono loop and it did very well for a lot of years. I finally hung it on a Lilly pad that I couldn’t get to and lost it. Fooling with those you’ll find what works best for what you use.
