    Default I'm thinking of starting...

I'm thinking I want to start tying my own jigs! I have no clue what to get or what I need or where to find it!

Will stick with 1/16 oz jigs to start with, so I'll need a mold and some sickle hooks! But, what kinda mold, barbed, non barbed??
Also need a vice, what kind, where to find it?
Threads and materials for bodies and tails??
    Power paint for the heads?
And instructional sources like videos to help teach me how to tie properly?

Thanks before hand for any and all info! I'll be retiring from the Air force soon so figured I'd like to learn how to make em!

I learned by reading threads in the jig tying fourm, and watching you tube.

This is a good link my friend Skip Nantz posted for those new to tying

I tied a few in my days but I allayed bought the 1/16 and 1/32 oz jig heads already made and used pipe cleaners for the body and feathers for the tail. They worked out pretty good for me. Time consuming wouldn't want to make a living doing that. LOL

I got started with the Crazy Angler slab pack. It will get you going with the basics and I highly recommend it.

    • Vise
    • Bobbin
    • Scissors
    • Two Threads (Suggest Black and Mono)
    • Two colors of Marabou
    • Two colors of Chenille
    • Two packs of Sickle Jigs

    SLAB PACK - Crazy Angler

You see a lot of people on here tying with feathers (called "hackle" or "salt water hackle") so if that interests you go ahead and order a couple of packs in your favorite color.

Only other thing I would suggest (optional) is some Flash. That's the shiny tensile strand you see on a lot of jigs.

If you want to paint your own jig heads, get some powder paint.

With these items, you'll be well on your way.

Welcome to the madness and hope you enjoy being addicted as that is what this will do. I don't care what anyone says or what you think, it's not easy to get what you want and spend what you want, LOL!

Ship did you good, but left of FAOL (Fly Anglers On Line) they have lessons for beginners and intermediate and advanced tying. Just because it's flies they still use same materials you will here so just see how they tie in chenille and do that.

People that did these lessons have been at this a lot longer than any of us and likely way longer than any youtube star person! So at least look at the lessons. Just click on Fly Tying, then Beginning tying and they eve lay out the tools and such.

What kind of mold should I order for 1/16 oz jigs, round head with or without the tapered barb?

Get the mold without the barb if you will be tying or you can use the barbed mold and cut off the barb to tie and use it with the barb for your plastics.
