I'm thinking about trying to tie some panfish flies. What is a good way for a beginner to get started without spending a lot of money. I kinda what to do a few to see if I want to get into it.

First thing, go to YouTube and watch a bunch of videos. Lots on there on Flies and Jig tying. Help you figure out what kind of materials you want to work with. My two cents is starting out get a cheap vise, a good bobbin with ceramic insert a few hooks and some thread and what ever material you want to try. Then if you like it and want to continue buy a better vise and go from there. If not then you haven't invested much.

Probably get a kit from Crazy Angler just to see. Just know most seem to like it and when you do, it's a huge addiction and you will be spending so much it will rattle your mind, LOL! Enjoy!

Actually I would say go to FAOL and read their Beginner Lessons and then you can tell if the YouTube video is right or not. Some are really good and have very good info, but some really are not the best way to learn IMHO! So use FAOL which is about fly tying, but they tie in chenille just like we do and they tie in tails just like we do. Is how I learned most of what I know! They also have an excellent tips page!

I bought a Bass Pro kit and use it now.. Have been thinking of a new one for Christmas. But it works great to start out on,

I can't expand on what has already been said much, other than to pick a simple pattern, like maybe an ant. Bluegill love ants and they're easy to tie. The bobbin Cray referred to makes a difference as the cheaper ones are bad about breaking the thread. A post was made by someone a while back by a guy who used a set of vise grips held in his bench vise to tie on for years, it was just a wintertime hobby for him. Best thing I can tell you is to ask any question you need to, we were all in your shoes once. It's a great addiction.

See if the local fly shop has a fly tying class. You can get a feel for what it takes without investing in tools, a vice, materials etc. If you go and like then you can take teh plunge. If you are on the fence this would be my suggestion.
