    Default New to Tying Question

    Hey Guys-

I've been stalking your posts over the last week or so and have made a first attempt at tying my own jigs.

If the jigs below look familiar it is because I have absolutely plagiarized the designs I have seen posted.

My question is why do you primarily tie a thin tail design/streamline design? I tied a few last night (not pictured, I don't have those pics on my phone) that used both the tip of the feather and the "marabou" section of the feather to give the jig a much fluffier look around the hook.

Is there a benefit to the more streamline look? Have y'all found it to more effective on crappie?

I have tied about 15 jigs so far and all but about 3 or 4 of them are the style shown below. I didn't branch out and use the marabou section of the feather until last night.

Thanks for all the help, your discussions have provided. Sorry about stealing your designs.

BTW, one more quick question. I used powder coat to paint my jig heads. I made sure to run a needle through the eye tie before curing but about half of them still closed up while they were in the oven, which was unfortunate at best. I have gone to simply not heat treating the heads after powder coat. How will they hold up? My thought process was, I will probably loose the jig before the paint wears off the head of the jig even if I don't cure it.

On the paint. Take a small pocket knife and clean the paint from around the eye. Then bake. You may lose a few but you will not be happy when the paint starts flaking off.

We are on here to share information and you are definitely not stealing anybody's patterns. that why we have this form to share information in this part is to streamline look it is the preference of years if you are wanting a streamlined look or whatever it is up to you the way you want your jigs to look most of the patterns that I tie are very small and somewhat streamline is I never use a lot of material for the trail I find the more that you resemble small fish or what ever that is hatching the better off that you are try to imitate whatever the fish are feeding on. you are doing fine on your and ties keep up the good work hope to see more and feel free to ask all the questions on here we will definitely try to answer all your questions in this way worked on here.

They look Good. You can make you jigs how ever you want. There's no rules. Just have fun with it. I'm not as good as most of the guys on here but I love making my own jigs and when you catch a fish on something you made it is more rewarding.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Below is the "fluffier" style I was trying to explain.

I'm just ready for this cool weather to move on and these fish to move up. I think we are going to go Sunday after church and bump around on Sardis. It's still probably early but maybe we can find some fish relating to structure, staging in 6-8 feet of water.

The great thing about tying your own is being able to make them exactly how you want them.

Jigs look good for a new guy, but let me tell you that paint will come off just riding in a box! I use a wood tooth pick that I whittle down some on the end that I clean as well as I can, but if I have some close while curing then I just heat a bodkin I use and stick it through the eye to clean it. The heat will melt it out of Ben after cured!

still if you don't want to cure, then just don't as its all up to you! However eventually you will have so many that a lot will end up chipping off!

Your jigs look good and be worry free they will get better. As far as the Powder Paint I was having this problem as well but simply solved it by using forceps to gab completely over the eye when dipping in color and then there is not\ pain on the eye at all. Good luck and have fun catching them on your own JIG
