These are one with just regular light and one under a Black Light....
I probably will not do this again because of how much time this took. I do have a lot more colors and many of them not Florescent so it would just be a regular picture, but still too many to do.
I should probably also mention the Black light I use is actually for a boat so I have to use a converter to use it in the house, LOL! However one good thing is it has 2 Black lights, one is white and one is Normal Dark Black light and i use both on for this.
2 Shades of FL Yellow.....
2 Shades of FL Chart.....
Hot Pink & FL Green....
FL Orange & FL Fire Orange.....(I couldn't get a good picture of the FL Orange because it's so bright when the Black light hits it).
FL Blue & FL Red.....

Is that something you sell, Skip?
Not normally! However at times I have sold some and a couple times when I had to make a special order which means I have to buy more than I want, I have sold some then too. Especially when I had 3 1/2 pounds of one shade and a pound of a different shade of marabou. I got guys together when I ordered if they had shown interest in going in with me. I still kept 1/2 pound of the more Green one and probably 1 1/2 pounds of the one I like best, LOL!
I have thought about stocking some colors to sell, but have not yet. I am moving away from tying for guys so have thought about having some special stuff like this to sell. Not that I will ever quit tying, just not going to tie for many and maybe just a few guys that have been with me for a long time. So I still need something to keep me busy and this may be part of that! I already sell a good bit of chinelle so it's not a big leap to all some nice Hackle and maybe a couple colors of marabou. This Salt Water Hackle is high though even buying by the pound!
Mostly I posted this because Pepop ask me on another board to show some Hackle pictures after I did the marabou. So I figured if I was posting it there I would also post it here in case some here were interested in seeing these colors under a Black light as most don't have a Black light at their tying station like I do.
Does the black light simulate what it should look like under water? I am just curious. Don't know unless you ask. I'm still learning everything I can about this hobby.
I don't really know how the fish see colors, but just that they do and UV as well as Florescent colors are visible more distance in water. We can't see these colors glow or really even see UV colors unless we use a Black light or a UV light. It's just a way so see how much difference there is in FL colors over regular colors. Also have found some materials that say they are Florescent, but since they don't glow/light up under a Black light I don't think they are. I know some high end Chenille that say some of their FL colors don't glow and I ask them why, they ask the people that do their dye work and were told on the ones I mentioned they had mixed regular color with a FL color to get that shade. I though shame on them for that and shame on me for buying it and not checking sooner so I could have sent it back!
Thanks for the explanation. Technical stuff this fly tying is.
Very good detailed comparison! Thanks Skip! I use a hand held UV black light on my boat and I have a standard black light for the house to test and view mine.
USAF Retired and fishing!
Your welcome!Just make sure to check your mylar chenille that says its FL too, have some that says FL, but no go under a Black light when other colors of theirs like FL Chart pop really nice while some are duds! Always handy to have at least one of these lights! Using a Black light it's a lot easier to take a picture if working alone and holding a UV light with one ha d and taking a picture witht the other will not be easy as holding that camer as still as possible it a big key!
