Default Tying trick for horse head jigs?

What is the trick for tying horse head jigs with out taking the blade off. Or is that the only option?

I pour my own so blade doesn't go on till done. If your really set against taking the blade off get some really large bag ties and use them to hold the blade out of the way but it could make it tough keeping a nice tight thread.

Its just too much trouble t tie them with the Blade on plus I buy all mine unpainted so have to take all off to paint anyway. It will not take many time trying with blade on that the thread gets caught in the split ring which is a pain. Besides if you buy painted ones chances are it will chip off easy.

Tie with the blades and split rings off. It is the only way that you will get a tight wrap on anything. I pour my own also From a ancient Do-It mold. This thing is so old think that it remembers President Ike.

I have tied a few and used some small tape to thread to hold the spinner blade to the head out of the way a bit. It helps.

I do have a tip that I don't think I have posted in a long time because it's not huge, but helps even though I never tie them when the blade is attached. Try using an Extended Reach Whip Finish tool! It will give you a lot more room to make your wraps.

Tie them with the swivel/blade on top -- that way when you whip finish you don't have to navigate as much bulk. Works for me every time. Take care

I just tied a bunch for tomorrow, roadrunners though.. not horse heads. I left the blades on and had no troubles at all. I put the jig in just like any other jig, hook eye pointing down. I bent the swivel out and laid the blade over the head and out of my way.

It worked fine but not sure if it is possible with the horse head, I've never tied those.

I have some RR heads I bought on clearance. Didn't feel like taking the blades off. I found it's much easier to tie them right-side up (reversed from a normal jig) so the blade and split ring hang downward. Easiest with a rotary vise, but probably doable with a regular vise. I've never had an issue getting tight wraps, but I use a rotary whip finish tool.
    Don't worry, catch crappie.
