Does anyone know of a good video that show the proper way to take maribou from the package to the jig? I don't feel like I'm being effiecient with my maribou.
Thanks

I spent my time learning using the lessons on FAOL. However all I do is if there are some parts stuck together I use my finger and thumb nail to scrape them so they separate. Then I pull off enough barbules and stack them, then I pick that up by pinching it about where I want to cut it to length (never cut the tips). Then tie it in. Some marabou feathers will have enough for more than just one jig, but lots of them all you get is enough for one jig. I save the tips of ever marabou feathers to use later on a fly or some other tie.
also FAOL has a tips section with a ton of tips covering so many topics, so I would recommend anyone that has not followed a link from me to FAOL should. I have the links in the sticky post and have posted it in numerous post.
Don, A word to the wise. Never buy loose marabou. There are too many junk feathers in those packs. Stick to strung blood quill marabou. Sometimes with blood quill; all of the barbules will "end" at the same point. This makes it extremely easy to stack without removing them from the stem.
As for how many feathers does it take to tie a jig... Usually I use 1 to 1+. I pluck the extremly short barbules near the end. I only tie in barbules that come to a fine point. These are located toward the top or end of a feather. Hope this helps

Unless you're palmering the marabou, I'd encourage you to look at arctic fox fur instead. It has the same effect underwater, it's easier to work with, there's almost no waste and it's much more durable.
You can buy a whole tail on eBay for about $10-$15 in a wide variety of colors (women over in Asia attach them to their purses as a fashion accessory) and it will make thousands of jigs.
