Materials Question
Hey Guys...I am only a week in to this and had a few questions about materials. I bought my initial supplies at Cabela's and the guy in the fly shop there, who was very helpful, suggested marabou for a tail material so that is what I have been using. I also placed an order at Crazy Angler and got some artic fox hair. Reading some of the stickies and looking at materials on Crazy Angler I see suggestions for bucktail and strung hackle. Could someone tell me a little about these materials and how they compare to marabou? Chances are I'll end up trying a little of everything but was wondering if I could get a little more info before I place another order. If this has been covered before I apologize. Hopefully I will post some pictures of a few jigs I've done today, just need to figure out how. Thanks for the help guys!

More jigs I believe are tied with Neck hackle than anything, then maybe marabou. As for hair, lots of Buck Tail and Kip Tail both. The list is about endless, fox tail or body hair as well as most any critter. My favorites are marabou and neck hackle then anything else. If you look at my site you can see a lot of Hackle, Marabou, Rabbit, some fox, and some Kip tail.

Appreciate the input Skip. Is there something you would suggest for my second round of ordering or should I just get a little of everything and see what I like?

I like rabbit a lot... And in early spring kip tail works really well... So I would suggest trying both those materials... Happy tying

This doesn't have to do with tying material but with tying tools. What type of bobbin do you have? Is it ceramic tipped? If not that is one of the first things that I would get. I would also get a bobbin threader. I have found that as I tied more and more, I end up with a lot of bobbins. I try to have at one for every two colors of thread that I have. I have also made sure that if it is a color of thread that I use often. It has a dedicated bobbin for it. I hate changing thread. LOL The bobbin threader will save a lot of time and head aches when it come to for threading them.
Hope this helps,
Bobo

Best threaders I have found is the plastic threaders they use for pulling floss through a bridge in your mouth.
