I just make sure that i do not hold them in the paint for long. Make it a quick dip and tap the shank on the edge of the jar to knock off any extra.

I don't have a fluid bed and maybe next year I might have to invest in one. Does anyone have any tips for a smooth powder paint job while only being able to dip out of a jar. I am half way pleased with my current paint jobs, but I have plenty of room to get better.

I use a wood tooth pick to clear the eye after painting and if I was dipping in the jar and not a fluid bed, I would stir the powder paint after every few jig heads. It will pack down fast if you don't keep it fluffed up.
Like Skip said, the main thing is to keep the powder fluffed up. If I'm dipping I'll put the lid on and roll the jar over & over about every 3 jigs. Then, QUICK IN-QUICK OUT with the hot jig!!
I built my own bed for $5 and bought a air pump at Walmart for $12 in the fish aquarium dept. And $2 for a box of 4 air valves..They are easy to make and you tube has videos all about them. Don't waste your money paying outrageous prices for one when there easy to make yourself.
I use a brown grocery bag cut of course to the dimension of my bed.it works the best as I tried coffee filters and that did not work well
I found that some colors of some paints don't like too much heat also. I drop a number off the count sometimes and it helps in not getting too much paint on. Glazing after dipping gets the fuzzy look off and keeps them from knocking the coating off of the one next to it.
