    Default Couple Questions

I just wanted to hear what everyone thought

    1. Is a rotating vice worth it? why?

    2. Whip finish or not?

I like my rotary for several reasons. It lets me roll it over and see the other side. Nothing more frustrating to finish one and flip it over to find something out of whack. It also helps in putting on the chenille, no changing hands. Most of all it's a good tool. Having good, smooth working stuff just makes the job easier. Should you ever decide to get out of this you can always get most of the money back from a good machine, not so with other stuff. I don't regret the investment of mine.

The first two vices did not rotate my present one is a rotary. The benefits were previously well stated.

I started out finishing using a half hitcher. When I started making lures with a rear tie( the finishing is on the rear of the hook in front of the bend) the knot would come untied. I then started using the whip finish. Along with some hard as nails coating I have no knot problems to date.

I used a fixed vice for several years. I recently purchased a Peak rotary vice and love it. But if first starting out I would suggest a cheaper fixed vice until you figure out if you are going to like tying and going to stick with it. I just use my fingers and tie half hitches for my finish knots on most simple crappie jigs. If you ever get down to Truman area I live in Clinton and would be glad to show you some things to get you started.

Hello Miller, I followed Jigging15's advice and went with this one to start out with...nice for $15.95. So far it has worked out great, but I can see where a rotary vise would be nice for someone more serious about tying. As a novice this one suits me just fine. I just wanted to make sure I enjoyed tying before spending more on a rotary. I'm using the whip knot with a finisher tool but haven't tested the jigs yet to see if I'm doing it right and if they will hold together.

Thanks for the offer! I have been tying for a while now, but do not have a rotary vice and was wondering if they lived up to the hype. Guess they do!

Would not have a vise that was not a rotary and always whip finish. As far as I am concerned its by far the best type vise and best way to finish!

And while we are talking about whip finishers, I wanted to point out the two that I know of. one is a thompson and the other is a Matarelli. I'm not smart enough to use a Thompson I guess cuz all I get from them is frustrated, and consequently haven't touched one since I bought a Matarelli. These are tough and make finishing so easy. Half hitches have their place, and I use them with certain jigs. The Matarelli does a good job and has a small learning curve.

Ok, I am not the only one. I have the thompson and have a heck of a time with it. I will get a Matarelli and try it out
