Bear hair

Hello from the river city,
Been looking on line for some Black bear hair and Grizzly bear hair. Tried Crazy, Janns, and a few others on the sticky page. These people that come in the bait shop have some picky taste everyday ! If I had bear hair jigs, they would say it was something else strange for this time of year ! Thanks for your help.

It's hard to find bear hair for sure, but Legal Polar Bear hair is the hardest and I bought a good bit in 2010 and still am just sitting on it sice it cost so much that I believe it would not sell due to what a jig would cost using it. I do plan on using it on personal jigs unless someone wants some that are way higher than a regular jig! It is very cool and different than any hair you have seen on close inspection. Thankfully I have lots of colors too. Only problem is gallon zip lock full, but not packed in was about $500!

There was another post recently about bear hair. The "Doll Fly" was polar bear and had a big following. Best I can do is red fox tail that has a brown/cinnamon color.

Saw in Netcraft or Barlows some imitation Polor bear. Don't know how close it would be to the real thing since I've never seen either one.

The fake stuff is not like real Polar Bear, really nothing is. You can look it up on the Internet where they talk about Polar bear and how it's different and the white is natural Florescent and has a shinny property that is just different. As I was on e told by the guy that introduced Polar Bear hair to me said on e you have seen it you will always know when it's real!

I believe you skip! I saw a mounted polar bear a while ago and ran my fingers thru the hair, it's totally different than anything else, the gaurd hairs are pretty stiff, if you left these on the jig you would need to make the hair pretty long, hence the plucking of the gaurd hairs. there are some kiptails in white, that when you get up towards the tails end the hair gets more transluscent and stiffer and longer, to me this would be the best imitation of polar bear, but you would have to look thru many tails to find those certain ones.

My Buddy that is a Pro fly tyer and on Whiting's Pro team told me how to use Polar Bear as you don't wan to not use it all since it's so hard to find and if you do it cost an arm and a leg. He told me when you start to use a piece you need to have 4 large medicine bottles, like the little plastic one caps come in and you will fine 4 different length hairs and use one bottle for each length and then you can tie 4 different length tails and all hair a little different, like the guard or longest hair separated for them rest and so on all the way through. It is very cool stuff and before I bought what I have he was tying some jigs for me to give me iras about his Rope Dub tying method and gave me a few that we tied with Polar Bear. I should also say with the price as crazy as it is one should probably get the synthetic and for get it. I know right now where some it, but at $22.50 for 1 Sq. inch, it's high, LOL!

I took picture of all his work which he tied a lot of stuff for me and I have saved it all to put in a show box to keep and not fish with. Here are a few using Polar Bear. Oh and some using a Black light which I taught him how to do in return.

I would think I took pics of these without the Black Light, but don't know where they are at this minute.



This one he also use synthetic seal for the body.

For Black bear hair check Moscow hide and fur - they have some dried hide pieces from $12 to $20 dollars. They have no Grizzly Bear at this time. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some polar bear and although the paperwork was a major pain I'm really glad I got it. It's really nice to tie with and a little goes a long way!!! if you're careful.

To tie the small jigs you have to pull the long hairs out and I do but I save them along with the underfur (makes great dubbing) - These two ties are the long hairs that I lined up and tied in for a couple more.

On the hunt for a few pieces of bear hair. brown or black don't think that I could find some grizzly hair. I did find a small patch of black bear in the bottom of one of my boxes of material. I will tie up a dozen or so for my self and look for some more to tie up for friends. Will be looking for a alternative to bear hair that will work might be something like Opossum or Raccoon that has been dyed.

A while back a guy on here was trying to sell some Polar bear and that's where I got mine, but I don't think he knew how much it was worth
