First of all, "no I'm not taking up knitting".![]()

Is there any draw backs to using knitting yarn? I can get scrap pieces of wool and blended yarn. I have to say that after looking at some it, it looks kind of buggy.
But will they hold up That would be my concern.
I have tied some for other folks upon request and they seem to like them never heard of any coming apart but ive never fished with them but i know they catch fish post some pics of yours im sure they look great

yup it works , and can be used as bubbing as well .
I been using yarn for years, usally lose my jigs before they come apart.
Yarn is used in fly tying a lot and see no reason it should not work! It may get a bit scraggly faster, buy should last plenty long genough
If your worried about it coming apart: use a piece of colored wire and reverse wind it over the body. I use yarn a lot; especially for a underbody to build the body up. Then cover with a couple pieces of saltwater flashabou. Looks great!
And scraggly is kind of what I'm shooting for. Years ago while ice fishing I was using an ice fly and the more scraggly (torn up) it got the more the fish seemed to like it. So what I've done is take the yarn and taken the 3 strands apart and fraid it up a bit, so the fibers look hairy. I'm tying them on the 80th ounce heads. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow.
I use it if I need a color I don't have, the wife has a ton of it. never had problems with it.
