Default HELP!! Bass Jig Head size?

Looking to tye some jigs for a craft fair at my wife's place of work (private School & Church) to benefit them. I'm no Bass fisherman, lol always seem to catch at least one minnow stealing bass while crappie fishing each time out, and have no idea what size of a jig head or even what kind I should tye on. Anyone have any good ideas?

    Thanks,
    Nate.

    Nate,
Now you have opened up pandora's box. Best bet is to go to tacklewarehouse and look at what they have. It all depends what part of the country your at as to the most used head sizes and how they are fishing at the time of year. Some want finesse jigs 1/8 to 1/4oz with light wire hooks, to 3/8 to 3/4oz with heavier guage wire hooks for flat and ledge fishing. Then you get into the flippers that want a hook strong enough to fish for shark. Or the ones that want a 30 degree line tie for swimming jigs. Then you can get into the football jigs 1/2oz to 1oz with a flat eye to a 90 degree. The list is endless as to head designs and hooks. The most widley used colors across the US are black/blue, green pumkin usually with a little orange, cinnnamon with blue flake or pbj, watermellon candy, and a few use junebug and in the fall, white.

Brushnjigs what would you use as an all around jig? Or your go to jig?

I was thinking a Buck tail Jig of some sort.

    Thank you,
    Nate.

Some bass jigs get as much as 1 Oz. especially when fishing matted hydrilla and they do that a good bit. Most though will use a 3/8 to 1/2 a lot, but depends a lot on if they are swimming the jig or pitching/flipping. There is so many different sizes and head styles it could make you pull out your hair. I would probably go for just silicone skirts for that though as they will hook on a soft plastic trailer to make all kinds of sizes and profiles.

Sorry for the delay of getting back with you. If your doing a buck tail, I would just do a ball head. That is what most of the smallie hunters, and cold water bassers use and in 1/8oz or 3/16oz with a 2/0 or 3/0 black nickle hook. About six strands of stiffer weed guard. Use black, black/orange, brown, brown/orange, black chartreuse,,,and easy with the orange and use it on the top of the jig. A powder blue is a killer in cold clear water.

in my part of the world fishing for crappie like you I catch a lot of bass on one 16th ounce jigs we catch bass all the way up to three and 4 pounds on them if we are going to use a jig for bass we would probably use a quarter ounce in use long hair and less we are using plastics skirts most the time I would be using plastic over hair or marabou most of the bass that I catch here or smallmouth we are in part of the country care that does not hold too many largemouth that is for the coastal area of Oregon mainly but they smallmouth bass are pretty well taken over the state and caught everyplace that you could think of they pretty well taken over the rivers throughout the Portland area in the Columbia River is quite noted for smallmouth bass and of course the snake River you can't get away from them even the river behind our house is full smallmouth and like skip said there are so many jig head styles that it deftly will make you pull your hair out for sure not to mention hundreds of different patterns there are to use for bass we have tied up a few in the past for a few guys I used to tie up a few bass jigs it's not my specialty so I pretty will stay away from them we catch enough of them on crappie jigs.

The Road Runner style lures are used for multi-species as well. PM me if you need help.
