i have found a white base coat works great with most candy colors but it tends to have a little different look than the chrome undercoat but still looks good and most of all it catches fish .
but i also use the vanilla powder paint versus the brighter whites becouse i beleve in using colors as close to natural as posable and most minnows belly colors are not a true white and vanilla gets about as close as posable to natural minnow white as i have found .
Just got these from Columbia Coatings this evening and I never used the candy colors before. The base coat is chrome and the only thing I can see is the top coat has to be really thin for the translucent effect. On the bottle they recommend the film thickness be 1-3 mls. I will try the fluid bed next and I don't think I will invest in a powder coat gun.

I have only tried one of their candy colors so can't say much about them. I do have a lot of CSI Candy Colors and don't care for using the silver paint as a under coat nor white.

To get a thinner coat dipping try dipping them cold. It will leave a thin coat you can heat then redip when it cools off again. This may help but not certain, I do it with my CSI trans and it worked great for a thin light color change like a transparent egg.
Yes the plated heads work much better since they are more shinny. I have good silver paint and it works, but not like a plated head. I don't care how you do it, the under what ever will make the difference and I have found nothing better than plated heads of course that means you have to have double inventory so you have unpainted heads and plated head. I have both silver and gold plated head as well as unpainted heads for regular paint. Can't tell you how many heads I have, but it is a gosh awful bunch. I even have some minnow heads that are plated and some unpainted. I don't want to even think about counting them. Unpainted I go from 1/80 to 1/4 and plated I go from 1/60 to 1/8. Of course hook sizes too, but just have plated heads in sickle in #6 and #4, but unpainted I keep regular bend and sickle and some size from #8 to #4 and of course some gold hooks in regular bend in #6, #4 & some #2. It's really unbelievable how many you can build a stock of and even ones I don't use much I have 300+. I did even get some Black Nichol plated heads, but didn't like needing to clean them so probably will not even show them on my web site as I don't want any more of them.
I have even forgot how I did some and what they are for sure, but I do think this is a Candy Orange head.

Now I am unsure if this roadrunner head is Candy Red or Candy Raspberry, but it's one of the 2. Notice the swivel is not brass color as roadrunners are, but this was Silver Plated.
