    Default Lead vs Lead-free

I'll try to keep this short. Lead after exposure to the elements starts to
"oxidize" at this point it becomes less toxic. In the water it will get a thick
crudie film on it. It will no longer give molecules to water, rendering it non-
toxic. However the smaller stuff like split shot, shotshell pellets, small jigs
they claim waterfowl will ingest. Well this number is more like .000001% of
waterfowl deaths. Almost every year they will have extremely high numbers
of waterfowl die from Cholera on the Platte river in Neb., some years it's in
the millions. Lead is a natural element, its in your body right now. Don't buy
into all the hype, be a voice. The lead-free metals are toxic too, you just
have to ingest more. Bismuth kills some Dr.s try to use it for treatment in of
Lyme disease with success rates being equal to death rates. Go LEAD!!

I'll tell ya who's responsible for all this junk... it's those darn guys that use the plain unpainted jig heads, that's who!!!

Powder paint is non toxic and I doubt a goose gizzard could grind the paint off of a properly cured jig! The law should state that all lead less than a 1/2 oz be powder painted!

Actually that's incorrect!!! Nets!!! All kinds that get left in the waterways account for more deaths than all fishing tackle put together. The original proposed ban that came out was more for the benefit of Loons than any other waterfowl. If a bird swallows a jig the hook does more damage than the lead.

Crappiedoc is correct, if you get the MSDS sheets on the non-lead theirs stuff just as hazordous as lead when melted.

The biggest fight we have is against the Environmental groups that are more organized than us.

I was was being sarcastic in my first post.

I agree, the hook on a jig will do more immediate damage than the lead will.

But, if y'all will think about a birds anatomy... you will remember that birds don't chew their food with their mouths like we do. They grind it up with their gizzards, and when the ingest lead shotgun pellets, split shot, sinkers etc. they grind those up with their gizzards too! Not only do they grind the oxidation off that makes the lead relatively harmless, they grind the soft lead up too! The water fowl eat these pieces of lead thinking they're gravel for their gizzards to grind with, but it's actually poison!

Environmental groups can be a pain in the butt, but if it wasn't for some of them our water bodies would be sewers and toxic waste dumps and the only fish we'd be catching would be 3 eyed Carp!

Steel shot for water fowl hunting was a good call.

I think if lead is painted with a good strong epoxy coating like powder paint or has a hook in it, it should be exempt.

Most hooks decompose, some very quickly. As a rule, the smaller the hook
the faster. GCD is right as well as Fatman. Birds aren't ingesting anything over
a 1/16 I'll bet, the main culprit back when this started was lead shot. I don't
recall the waterfowl hole, but I believe it was in Minn. The organization part
is a definate BULLSEYE, so do we start a political action group? The studies
support the fact that fishing tackle is not the culprit. And lead-free, well
aren't there enough mines in the ground. Lead, next to water, is the most
recycled element in the world. Lead generally kills not mutate, living organisms
    cheleate lead from tissues.

Folks- We're coming down to the wire and the only surefire way to be heard is to use the official government comment form at regulations.gov. I've taken the pain out of the process and boiled it down to two clicks, type your name, and whatever comment you want to make. It's easy, fast, and guaranteed to place your comments in the EPA's public record on this proposal. Go to my "Two click comments" thread, here, and you're two clicks away from being heard.

Guys this all comes down to Government Control and pressure from "Preservationist" (SP) Groups .... not Conservationist (this gets muddied up by the media as to which is which) ..
I have signed the letter but I think that if they had all the Signitures in the country they will go ahead and do what they have started out to do ... How many Centuries have we been using Lead ??? Its been stretched out of reason .. just like the oil spill amounted to a can of beer in a football field.

No. Petitions and form letters count as one opinion. By submitting individual, personal comments, we make them count each of us and read what we have to say.
