Hackle is used for every species I can think of on both jigs and flies. I have jigs for crappie, bluegil, trout, perch, salmon, steelhead and salt water that have lots of hackle on them in many different ways.Tails, heads, palmered and whatever other way I can think to use it.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

ok maybe i am confused (new guy) is hackle a type of material or is it the style of tying with wrapping the feather around so it sticks out of the chenille? i watched the you tube video on the post first time with hackle.

Hackle is just a feather that has a lot of uses. Wrap it to give the fly a hairy look. Use it for tails to make the tail look wider. Use it to make fins and backs. Wrap it around the top to give an emerger look to a fly. Too many things to really list them all.

About any feathers on a birds body is some sort of hackle.

I use hackle for tail, palmered hackle and hackle collars. If there is a use for it I will on both flies and jigs.

You're thinking of palmering (wrapping feathers around the hook shank/body of the jig/fly).

Both and I make them all the time. Have one customer that has me make jigs with no tail and all one color, first ones were black head and body with black palmered hackle. Now I have to do his pink and then Chartreuse. He says he just hammers the giant crappie in Miss like this.

    Here is one of his...
