Hays, the objective of the spoon is to let it flutter. With the weight of the jighead, you wont get that effect when you vertical jig it. Maybe try it with a very small jighead. I've been spoonfishing for quite a few years and found that with the weight against or to close to the spoon, you dont get the action they're designed to give.
