Epoxy On Jigheads

I just painted my first jigheads using nail polish. I base coated the heads with white acrylic, then painted them. I finished by topping with Hard As Nails. I don't know how durable a finish that is though. I've read where some of you top coat your jigs with epoxy. I got some today from Wal Mart in the automotive section but I don't know the best way to use it. Would you apply it with a brush or what? Here's a pic of a jig I made with the nail polish.

Don't worry with epoxy. Clear nail polish is fine. Plus epoxy will yellow over time unless you get the good stuff.

I just use "Hard as Nails" on my jigs. The only time I have used epoxy was when I do a Clouser Minnow with an epoxy head. That is pretty much just to keep the eyes in place and not move all around when a fish hits your lure. For regular jigs, I would not worry about using it.

Epoxy is a real pain in the keister. I use it on a couple of fly patterns and had to get a rig so I could put the finished fly on this wheel that turns really slow to keep the epoxy from dripping as it will.

Either get powder paint and cure it when painted or vinyl, I use powder when I can, but sometime I use vinyl, but it's hard to be neat with a brush and I don't like dipping the heads in it as it's then a pain. I just brush it on kind of thick to keep brush strokes and other not smooth things from happening as it levels.

Powder paint is easiest IMHO (also very hard coating), but you do need some things to do it well. Like a fluid bed or if not tying many just keeping it fluffed after each or ever few.

Take the Epoxy back to Walmart.

Don't worry about using epoxy.Your jig will get ate or stuck before the paint fails anyway.Nice jig.

The only epoxy I use is the two part stuff from Janns Netcraft and only on jig heads that I've painted and will use with plastics so the paint doesn't melt.

Thanks guys, that answers my questions. I've been using powder paint mostly and having good results but I love trying new stuff and no better way to learn it than the "right" way. Thanks, Scott
