    Default Kraft fur

what is your opinon on kraft fur, I bought a 9"x 12" piece for 2.99 at Hobby Lobby, not a big choice in colors. The hair is long enough but I found it hard to work with but managed to make a couple jigs. I was wondering if the fly tyers supply stores is a better grade.
What are the Pros and cons? Thanks
    It ain't nuttin but luck.

I have tried it on pinkie type 1/16 jigs, and it looks good in the water, but it takes me considerably longer to get it to look right on the jig, because of all the trimming and shaping with scissors. havent fished with it yet tho. I bought some from bps, and also punisher jigs, they were about the same type fiber, but the bps brand with rumpf on the label was a little longer, and thicker, as in more fibers to the sq. inch. static electricity makes it hard to handle for me. but it really tapers beatifully if you are using about 2" length.

Static electricity was a bother for me too. But then again, it is with marabou too. Sometimes worse than others times.

    Thanks for the reply.

just like with anything there is good kraft hair and low quality kraft hair. usually if you buy from a fly tying place they have better quality then a place such as walmart or a kraft store since the hair is made specifically for the lures.

Does your wife use the little white pieces of stuff in the dryer for what ever they use it for? I think smell and static cling? I use that for taking away static electricity from my marabou when tying. I just take the feather I am about to take apart and pass it through one of them little white sheets and the static is gone.

Mostly have this trouble in the winter.

I don't really know what they are, but they work.

Oh and for the Kraft fur, I have some, but don't use it much. I do like one color that I got from a guide here on Toledo bend and it is the two color black and gray?? It works on crappie for sure and he ties the full length even though it is really long. So there goes the short tail thing, LOL!

thanks for the tips skip. I have a peice of that black and gray craft fur from punisher lures, and thought it was kinda homely looking, may have to get it out and tie one up for a second look.

I recently got started on the craft fur kick.... It's not the easiest to deal with but makes some nice jigs. I use the craft variety mostly, you just have to get the stuff with longer fibers. Even then I end up throwing away alot of under fur just to get the longer stuff. True fly tying material is probably by far better, but hurts my back pocket too much.
Here's one I made using craft fur, posted it a while back....

There is another member on here (that I pretty much learned from) that will hopefully post with better info and maybe some pics of his jigs.

Skip..My wife suggested the same thing for static elec.. I kinda dismissed her suggestion, but now that you use it, I will try it.But I will have to give her the credit forsuggesting it, at least on this side of the PC..:D

Attica fish..I don't see anything wrong with that jig. Looks really good. I saw some more on the jig picture section that looked good too.

What I tied for him and for my self has a Black head and thread neck with just that craft fur and some silver flash (one strip down each side).

Found a picture from about 3 years back. I would make the flash a bit longer now...

By all means give her the credit at home for sure as you don't want to tell her someone here told you so you then would believe it, LOL!

I get my wife to save them and now have way more than I need, but all have been used first in the dryer so let her do that and then you take them to your tying station. Just take a marabou feather that is out of control and pull it through that little sheet between you hand and it will then behave.
