Default OT: Jigging for freshwater stripers

I'm going to get some big, baitfish-shaped jig heads and tie them up to look like shad for freshwater stripers. I'm going to Texoma in March, and I think they usually just drop shad that time of year. I want to see if stripers will hit a jig then. Any thoughts, experiences,....?

I think maybe the right combination of bucktail/flash/and some kind of plastic tail (back half of a Super Fluke) or a wabbit stwip would get nailed by some stripers.

This woulda been a good entry for the Shad Swap

I usually fish Keystone lake during spring when they are generating below the dam.

I would use heavy line with a 11ft surf rod to cast a 5oz sinker and let it drift with the current. I use my hand tie buck tail jigs, the hooks are 5/0 Oshaugnessy eagle claw.

The buck tails I usually use white or chartreuse with couple flash in them, the stripers down there tear them up.

I tried out the rabbit zonker for crappie at Hefner lake works really nice, it has more movement than I imagine.

I would just stick with the buck tails, the ones you shot are good enough. Give me a picture sample of your buck tail jig and what style of fishing you are doing and I will let you know.

Snap- we're vertical fishing from a boat, and a stout, ~6' rod is choice.

    Those jigs look good fishhunter!

OSJ - You should try to make up that Ark. bucktail on a jig, they look really good in the water and fan out to the shad shape when you pause them under a float so would guess they would work OK for vert. fishing. Make sure you post whatever you make up.

I will for sure. It will be a while before I can get to my vise- my buddy and his brother just left Tulsa for Midland, TX and a wheel popped off of his truck going down I44 here in Lawton, OK. Gonna get them situated and back on the road and then gonna stop in OKC for some more r & r then to Stillwater and the crappie and the vise.
