Make sure you take the bone out of the tail and cut away any fat . You can use salt but I recommend Borax .

Thanks. I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB ID about 16 yrs. ago. Me and a couple of friends used to crappie fish somewhere on the Snake River along the Oregon border I think NW of Boise can't remember the name of the place. All I remember is hand cramps from cleaning fish. lol Thanks again

Use Borax and salt, is all you need.

I go by the dying bucktails site when I first started. I do a few extra things, after I get the bone and most of the fat, I use shampoo and hair conditioner then the rinse.

I haven't dyed any yet but I comb the hair out before I use borax and I tack it.

Question Questions about dying hair for jigs.

I went by the deer processing business here in town and asked them to save me a dozen tails they said no problem. The question I have is where can I find any info on dying these tails besides with kool aide? Has anyone used the kool aide method and does the dye fade while fishing the jig? I tried a search on the net but did not get what I was looking for so any info would be appreciated. I just stretched and boraxed one today. The hair on local tails seem to be not as stiff as the ones I bought out of the store.
