Good question. To preface, I recently received a jig "model" from a prominent Indiana bass fisherman that had its collar unraveled. It was made by a prominent southern lure company noted for its soft plastic worms and baits with "pig" references. There is a lot of thread wound around its collar, so as I pulled the loosened tag end it tightened up eventually. I later trimmed a couple of inches of thread away and sealed the jig's collar.
When I tie a finger whip and bury it beneath chenille, I give it at least three wraps before I pull the knot tight. Then, I use a dubbing "type" needle to apply a sealing coat of thin nail polish around the thread. This process works best when using a magnifying lamp (at least for me).
Don't worry about any hardness of chenille near the knot and jig's head. Think of it as merely an extension of the lead. Fish will continue to bite the lure.
The bottom line is...I'd use some form of lacquer, glue, or cement.
