Which is preferred when it comes to these two.
Deer belly hair or kip tail

I'm with Jiggin Joe, unless I don't have any kip in the color I need then it's bucktail.

Depends on what I am tying..I like them both.
Good gill jig wit the deer belly and a good crappie jig wit the kip.

Wouldn't belly hair flair like a SOB?
Or does deer belly not have as much air in the fibers?
"Mister, I love the way you wear that hat."
"You don't know nothin'."

I thought the same thing, isn't the belly hair the stuff I use to spin hair to make mice and hopper flies? Been awhile since I've bought some, don't remember what it was....
I like the kip myself, its as easy to use as the squirel tail. The deer belly seems to flair out to much for me.
I like kiptail, then tree rat and rarely use the bucktail. The bucktail seems to long so I trim it a lot and make a mess.
For small stuff, kip and squirrel tail would be my first and only choices really. I do use a ton of bucktail but only on very long streamers and have used a lot of deer belly hair for spinning bugs and flared body patterns.
There is a way to use the belly hair to make a very interesting jig pattern though. Tie it in toward the head letting it flair as much as it wants and then pull it down to form a kind of fat belly. You can also tie it in backwards and do the same thing for a more formed and rounded body.
It all has it's uses for me but for basic tails and small ties I really don't like deer body hair.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.
