    Question Griffin Spider Vise?

I am in need of a new vise, have a pretty cheapy one now so anything is an upgrade. Been looking at the Griffin Odyssey Spider. Anyone on here use one or know it? Would it work ok for both jigs and flies? Cost around $80, wanted to stay under $100, but the next level of rotary is a big jump in price.... what's different about the Spider?

No rotary now so didn't know if I should just stick with a straight simple vise and save my money.... for other materials. :D:D:D

Yes it is a jump to the next level, but it depends on what you are looking at and what you want. First I would say do you want a vise that will last probably a life time and maybe never need another or would you prefer just getting one for now and in a couple of years jump up again? It is totally up to you.

I can't say much about the vise you ask about, but if I wanted the best opinions on a vise I would actually post this question on the FAOL board. Lots of great fly fishermen and tiers on that board and lots have been doing it a lot longer than most of us.

I would also tell you that if it was me I would look very hard at the Peak as it is know from what I read a fine vise and great machine work on them for about $140. Look hard you may beat that, I just don't know that for sure. Also in that range is the Renzetti Traveler which I have it's big brother the Saltwater version with cam jaw. Love it, but I don't tie as much on it as I do my other vise. It's too much so will not talk about it.

Anyway just thought I would give you something to toss around and go to the tying board at FAOL.

I own a Griffin Superior 3ARP vise. Great jaws. Griffin has a good reputation for hook holding. My vise has 360 degree rotation, so I'm satisfied with it. It's not a true rotary vise.

Though, I get by with it.

That stated, I'd check out this vise review at Fly Fish Ohio.

Read the entire article or go straight to the summary. You just might become interested in a Danica Danvise. It meets your price point.

I just received my Danvise last week and I have put about 50 or 60 jigs through it already (everything from 1/80 oz to 3/8 oz football heads) and I have to say I am impressed. I got mine off of eBay for $75 shipped from this seller. Seeing as I have pretty large hands and tying jigs you usually have a bit of a "tail" I would suggest getting the extension arm as well.

The only functional thing I have read negative is the fact that some people that are too lazy to adjust the jaws have had issues with it breaking on them. Taking a simple 3 or 4 seconds to adjust between hook sizes really isn't a big deal if you want to make a tool last for a long time. I personally think the cam on the jaws is awesome. If you do go with it just watch the dvd that comes with it and it shows you how to adjust the jaws the correct way.

If you're using a lot of chenille or hackle you can't beat having a true rotary it's a major time saver and hassle saver as well, I love my Danvise so far.

    Good luck with your decision!

I was looking at the superior 3ARP as well, but that is some what of a step up in price. Thanks for the info, and the vise shootout page has some really good info on it. Skip's choice of the Peak was the big winner....

    Thanks again!

I have a Renzetti and like it very much. I would say to go where they have the different brands and play with them. Get the feel of the vise. A lot of it is what feels good to your hand. I am sure you could get use to any vise but there will be one that you will like more than the others. When you ware out the jaws, and you will they are replaceable, Good luck

Ended up jumping up a bit to the Odyssey Cam vise from Griffin. Got a great deal from Laserdoc on it, just couldn't turn it down!!! He is working right now to put them up on his site, but if you send him an email he can give you all his pricing.

Can't wait to get it in hand..... painting some jigs so I am ready!!!! :D:D:D

You should have yours next week. I now have all the vices and prices on my product page.
Seems like I keep adding more things. Guess I will need a bigger website soon.:D
