Pole limits in Indiana

Just for the record, the rule was changed in 1953. Prior to that, you could only use two poles per person. No specific reason for the change other than it was one of those recommendations by the public that was accepted and voted in. Interestingly, it only applied to open water fishing. Ice fishermen were still restricted to just two poles per person until 1970 when they passed the rule (actually passed in 1969; effective Jan. 1, 1970) that made the limit the same for all anglers regardless of season. Several people were fined or even arrested for breaking both rules over the years. Back then, those kind of things still made the papers.

I enjoy being out fishing, who wants to hurry up catch their limit and go home.

I would rather take 4-5-6 hrs for a limit on 3 poles then maybe fish 1-2 hours to catch 25 on 6-7-8- or more poles and go home.

That's just my opinion cause I just like being out on the water, its peaceful.

Just like deer hunting I started using a muzzle loader back in the early 80's before it got popular. I liked giving the deer a chance and making 1 shot count, 1 shot 1 kill not unload my gun hoping at least 1 bullet would put him down.

I get more frustrated at other rude, or stupid boaters,than not being able to fish with more than three poles.

Around 1972 my wife gave me a portable fish finder made by Lowrance.
It was a square box flasher type painted green which ran on 6 volt lantern batteries.
Pretty much state of the art in fish finders back then.
It was very good for letting me know how deep the water was but little else.
Anyway i was in a barber shop waiting my turn and was reading an outdoor magazine.
An article by a regular on the staff was entitled (Starnes at large), it being the name of the (professional) who wrote it monthly.
Anyway this month he chose to vilinize those dastardly people who were using those new fish finding boxes he predicted would be responsible for eliminating every fish that swam if they were allowed to continue to be used.
Now folks this was in the early 70s, and here we are still hearing the same message?

Go back further in time,,,rotflwhen the first fish finders came out, Ontario, I think Minnesota, and maybe it was either Wis. or Mich outlawed them for no more than a year? I took a Humminbird super 60 up to Ontario in the 70’s and got it confiscated at the border and picked it back up coming back from fishing to the US and didn’t know about the laws. :cheers2

I just use 1 when I crappie fish, usually do just fine. I don't spider rig though, so never needed more than 2 rods at a time. Since I quit fishing with live bait, 1 is all I ever use.

I know this will tick some people off so I'll say right at the beginning I'm sorry if it does. I'm just giving my honest views on the subject of pushing as many poles for crappie as you want. All I can say is just think about what I say before reacting. Its my opinion not trying to argue with anyone.

If Ind. went to 4 poles some would want 5, if Ind went to 5 some would want 6, if Ind went to 10 some would want 11, etc. Why don't the some just ask to be able to use a drag net, toss it out, troll thru a crappie school, roll it in, count out your 25 and go home after 1/2 hour. This is kind of like deer drives, I don't agree with this method either.

Its call fishing and hunting for sport, give your quarry a chance.

I agree with the idea you have someone will always want more, BUT a limit is a limit and with that said, I think the fine for being caught with more than a limit should be a lot higher. The number of poles used would just dictate the time spent fishing. Personally I prefer the time spent because it's so peaceful out on the water, well most of the time.

I think a lot of people would love that idea. There would be whole YouTube channels devoted to “cast netting for crappie”.
