Finding Slabs Amongst the Dinks
I am not much of a hot weather crappie guy...mostly spring and a little ice fishing. But I went out today on a lake north of Ft Wayne that I've not fished for crappie before. I was using minnows. I found a spot that produced a 6 inch crappie on almost every cast as soon as the minnow settled under the bobber. Fishing about 6 feet deep in 12 feet of water along a weed/lilly pad line. There is no structure. Like most of our lakes up here, the lake is just a big bowl of water with no downed trees, no drop offs, etc...just a muddy bottom that gets gradually deeper the further from shore you get. Don't know what the water temp was (high 70's low 80's ?). My electronics aren't working right now. Couldn't get a bigger fish. Tried fishing deeper and didn't get anything. I know that there are bigger crappie on the lake because guys have posted photos on the lake association's face book page (mostly spring fishing).
What would you guys do to find the big ones, or would you just figure that all that was biting were dinks today?
