    Default What is this

This popped up while fishing over tree top. Looks like what you see when water goes down you see them on branches sticking out of water or just under water. But never seen one this big must have beeb 4 feet long and 7-8 inches aroundBut it was 20 feet deep where this popped up. Just curious if anybody knew what it is. Anyway all dinks (Monroe)

yep, looks like a freshwater sponge to me...they got them in Hammond by the water filtration plant too.

to me, it's not only interesting that indiana supports a wide variety of freshwater sponges, but also, fresh water jellyfishes (I've seen 'em in Patoka).

Actually, guys .... it's not a freshwater "sponge", per se, but a colony of Bryozoans :

Very indicative of good water quality !!

Good water quality doesn't necessarily mean "clear" water. Bryozoans eat microorganisms and other one celled animals, so farm runoff could help by making the water more fertile. If it looks like a brown ball of jelly ... it's Bryozoans. Ain't nothing else I know of that looks like they do.
