    Default Shooting at boat ramp

I saw this post on the Kansas forum today. We've had some boat ramp problems in our area too. Everyone should be vigilant and watch out for each other. Use 911 to advise law enforcement of possible problems before it comes to this. No one needs to die this way. Let's hear some about some ways to ensure our safety at our local ramps.

Fisherman shot to death at Smyrna boat ramp | WKRN News 2

Have taught hunter safety the last few years before I retired and can remember that I never thought I would ever need to carry a firearm when fishing. With today's world the way it is and more shootings taken place I would consider getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Hate the thought of doing that but it would definitely be a game changer in the event something materializes. Gotta remember...can't control people, just how you react to them. Have heard about 3 or 4 shootings near lakes (nation wide) this year. Druggies and thieves are getting brazen and breaking into homes in our area to get prescription medicines....a boat ramp with vehicles (with personal property in it), is only a temptation waiting to happen.

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 53-year-old fisherman was shot to death at a Smyrna boat ramp late Friday morning.

Police say William Hawkins of Murfreesboro was interrupting a crime in progress when he was shot and killed at Mona Boat Ramp in Smyrna.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses heard the shooting at around 11 a.m. and then found Hawkins, who died at the scene.

“We extend our sympathy to the Hawkins family for his tragic death,” Sheriff Robert Arnold of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said. “We are thoroughly investigating to determine who is responsible for his murder. We are ever vigilant in keeping our communities safe.”

The witnesses are being questioned by authorities. The investigation is ongoing and will be worked on through the weekend.

Evidence was collected at the crime scene and an autopsy will be performed on Hawkins.

People with information are asked to call Detective Kyle Norrod at 615-904-3043 or Capt. David Hailey at 615-904-3113

I have had a problem at Coalshaft ramp on Shelbyville a few years ago . 2 people were acting strange and asking me off the wall questions . I had my 10 year old son with me and they would not leave us alone . I keep a weapon locked in my boat . Finally I asked them to leave and they got pissed off and started cussing at us . They seen me reaching in my boat to grab my weapon and turned and left . Don't know what would have happened if they kept on coming but I wasn't going to let them hurt my son .

I carry a gun when I go fishing these days. I keep it in my jacket or on my belt when I'm at the ramp and parking lot then put in in my tackle bag once I'm in the boat. I hope that I never need it but if I do I want it readily accessible.

With things like this happening you have to look out for yourself.
