Fisherman shot to death at Smyrna boat ramp | WKRN News 2
Have taught hunter safety the last few years before I retired and can remember that I never thought I would ever need to carry a firearm when fishing. With today's world the way it is and more shootings taken place I would consider getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Hate the thought of doing that but it would definitely be a game changer in the event something materializes. Gotta remember...can't control people, just how you react to them. Have heard about 3 or 4 shootings near lakes (nation wide) this year. Druggies and thieves are getting brazen and breaking into homes in our area to get prescription medicines....a boat ramp with vehicles (with personal property in it), is only a temptation waiting to happen.
SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 53-year-old fisherman was shot to death at a Smyrna boat ramp late Friday morning.
Police say William Hawkins of Murfreesboro was interrupting a crime in progress when he was shot and killed at Mona Boat Ramp in Smyrna.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses heard the shooting at around 11 a.m. and then found Hawkins, who died at the scene.
“We extend our sympathy to the Hawkins family for his tragic death,” Sheriff Robert Arnold of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said. “We are thoroughly investigating to determine who is responsible for his murder. We are ever vigilant in keeping our communities safe.”
The witnesses are being questioned by authorities. The investigation is ongoing and will be worked on through the weekend.
Evidence was collected at the crime scene and an autopsy will be performed on Hawkins.
