fish finder instead of flasher

My first ice-fishing unit was a $5 garage-sale Humminbid flasher. The best thing I did was in making a floating unit that would hold the transducer level. I made it out of PVC, with a piece of pipe insulation at the top to make it float.

ps - I've since spent a hundred or so dollars on a used Vexilar. Well worth every penny.

While playing with my 788, I've been able to zero in on the thermocline, something that my flasher or 250 can't do. Just something to think about.

There's no thermocline in ice fishing that i know of.

You are correct. Once a lake freezes over the thermocline fades away. I also use my unit for open water season, and finding the thermo can be very important there.
