And other places further north are what? Terrible? I seem to enjoy the Dakotas pretty well. WAY less crowded, tens of thousands more waterfowl, and places tohunt.


Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Here's some numbers to consider:
2014 North Dakota Duck Harvest: 545,000 (213k mallards, 84kteal, 65k gadwall, 30k shoveler, 27k redhead, 24k pintail, 14k bluebill, 14kwigeon, 7k canvasback, remaining 67k mixed variety)
2014 North Dakota Goose Harvest: 190,000
2014 Florida Duck Harvest: 191,000 (65k Ring-necked, 46kteal, 18k bluebill, 13k Wood Duck, 11k Shoveler, 7k Redhead, remaining 31kmixed variety)
2014 Florida Goose Harvest: 6,000

I know it's not all about harvest numbers, but it’s a reflection of the number of waterfowl we see in a year also. I guess you consider yourself lucky to live as far south as you do, but consider there are MANY other great places in theworld, especially if you're highlighting waterfowl.

Just pointing that out. The prairie pothole region is a pretty damn sweet place to witnesswaterfowl colors and breeding rituals also.

Have seen wooping cranes flying in formation here. At least that is what I think they are. They fly pretty high. Beautiful.

Camo, I wasn't trying to put us above anyone else, merely talking about what we here in Florida experience and don't talk much about. The Dakota's are one of the most special places in the country for lots more reasons than their Duck and goose harvest. One of the things on my list is opening day in the Dakota's Pheasant season. Me on one side and my buddy on the other side of a fence row or treeline and a dog and handler working toward the end where they have no choice but to fly. I turn 60 this year and the knees may not let me get that done without large amounts of Ibuprofen, but I still would leave and make the trip. After 25 years of driving over the road I have seen and found many things that warrant a mention, and gven time I will get to some of them. The Prairie Pothole Region is legendary among waterfowlers, Thanks for pointing it out for us all.

There's nothing better than enjoying the canvas that the good Lord above painted!! If you don't have time to enjoy even that little Finch that scolds you for being in its territory, you need to take a step back and get your priorities straight.

You got to see some beautiful works of "art" there skeetbum. The one thing you all have on us north of you is the Mottled Duck. That's a beautiful bird as well!

I know you weren't, and I enjoyed your post as well. There's literally dozens of places I'd love to head to on hunting/fishing excursions! And you're right on point, there are a ton of great sights and spectacles that people drive past every day without ever taking notice!

Great read! I went to Buras, LA the 2nd week in January with my son and son-in-law and had a great time. Saw more birds than I have seen since I was a kid growing up in Michigan. Catching reds and trout was a bonus.
