Crappie vs White Perch on Slab Sauce

What is the difference between Crappie and White Perch. One of the members said he caught both in one trip. I thought they were the same thing. I know there are white and Black Crappie.

Boone .... some people call Crappie "white perch" ... which is incorrect, as there is a seperate species of fish known as White Perch. But, don't feel alone in not knowing ... I grew up hearing Freshwater Drum called "white perch" ... LOL !! (again, a totally different species of fish)

White Perch are actually a member of the temperate bass family, like a Striped Bass or White Bass, & not a true "perch" : Google

Crappie are a member of the Sunfish family, along with Largemouth/Smallmouth/Spotted Bass & Bluegill.

Crappie, like most other fish species, have a collection of "nicknames" .... some of which include the same names & nicknames of totally seperate species, along with regional preferences. Some people even refer to all Black Crappie, as male White Crappie .... since the male White Crappie, during the spawning season, turns darker & it's black markings expand.

Now that looks like what we call a White Bass. Some people think that they are just large Barfish. The Barfish are smaller and have a yellowish tint to them. These White Bass are pretty good to eat, not so fond of the Barfish.

Boone, I'm with YOU on that one. I think it looks more like a White Bass, than a White Perch. (especially since it seems to have predominant stripes, and the top fins are seperated by some space ... both of which occur on a White Bass, & not on a White Perch).

And, just to add a little more "what did you call that fish" flavor to this thread .... I was taught to call a Freshwater Drum, a White Perch, when I was young ... and didn't know any better until I was in my late 20's .... LOL !!! None of the lakes in KY even have White Perch in them, that I know about. It was just a erroneous nickname that was used by the locals !!

Now, about them "barfish" .... those are Yellow Bass, and related to the White Bass (Morone family). Don't know about down your way .... but, up here, the Yellow Bass are considered as a "good eating" fish. Like the White Bass, you have to remove the red meat from the outer sides of your filets, when cleaning them ... and that helps remove the heavy "fishy/muddy" taste.

I've known several people that call, bluegill, crappie, red ear, and just about any other pan fish, perch...

White perch is what i catch when i fish for white perch!Crappie is the Yankee term for white perch.Cajuns try to confuse Yankees by calling white perch sac a lait........ and it works, just look at the super moderators explanation! lol

I know this is an old thread. A white perch, when you pull up on his top dorsal fin it will also pull up his back dorsal fin. That doesn't happen with a sandie. Here is a helpful link.
