Jim and I fished Lake Oconee today for the first time in a couple of weeks. We did not have a good day. We kept 5 fish. We started at mid lake with our usual pushing/pulling technique. The fish were scattered early and we felt they would be "catchable" for a while before bunching up on the timber. They weren't catchable, at least not for us. By 8:30 they were already deep in the woods. They stayed there and we could not lure them out. After about 2 hours I switched over to straight lining as fishing the timber in the low water made pulling difficult. We moved at 11:00 and found plenty of fish in the second spot also but the bite was painfully slow. The crappie just did not like what we were offering, the way we were offering it or we just didn't know what the heck we were doing (probably the latter). The water temperature was 68 when we started and 73 when we finished. The good news is that Jim caught a beautiful 15 1/2 inch fish (first fish of the day). The size of the fish seems to be improving. As others have said in recent posts, the fish are on brush piles and timber particularly in the mouths of creeks and coves. On Saturday I am taking one of my grandsons and his friend. I do not plan on trolling. I think I will take minnows, floats, number 2 aberdeen hooks, and spinning rods. We will be fishing brush piles. I don't know what else to do. If any of you plan on fishing this weekend please be careful. The water is probably 3.5 feet below normal.
thanks for the good report Hotwater .i think the slow bite is from the low pressure that has been hanging over us .
