Oconee 4/17/15

We fished Oconee today and kept 22 crappie. Most of the fish were 11-12 inches. In the picture Kissimmee Kowboy is holding the largest fish of day. It measured 14.5 inches. I must take some credit as I netted it for him.

The most consistent fish catcher for us seems to be a tube jig that is red/yellow/chart and a blue and black curly tail. The majority of the fish were caught in the timber or close to it. I think there is bass fishing tournament this weekend so beware. Earl it was good to talk to you.

Those are Jim's rods I am not sure of the brand. I think he purchased them in Florida years ago. Several companies make rods like that (B&M, Shooting Star, Shakespeare). They are telescopic and the length we use is 12-13 feet. It is like trolling with a cane pole no reel. We use a cork to set the depth.

I bought those yellow poles in Altamonte Springs Florida about 15 years ago. I wish I could see all the fish in one pile that they have put in the boat. The brand name on them is Ocean city and you can't buy them anymore. If I could find some I would buy me some new ones. they are the best straight pole that I have ever used. All of the other ones that Hotwater mentioned I have used and they can't hold a light to the old yellow ones.

fished Oconee Saturday am ...in the rain,....again with customers... 1st fish of the day long lining was a TOAD!!! 9 year old...long trolling rod...reeling too fast...Well, at least I got a visual before...HE GONE! THEN HE LOST THE NEXT ONE...and that's when the heavy coaching came out...got the rest of them into the boat! Did pretty well considering the amount of rain ! Fish are scattered at best in the timber...some shallow on outsides...most were kinda deep...no pics ..nuthin...Iphone stayed in a zip lock bag all morning! looking forward to the next day I get to fish in the sunshine and not have to turn the bilge pump on!

Thanks for the report Jody. We like fishing on cloudy days but this is getting ridiculous.
