My fishing partner and I made it to Blackshear today to give his boat a trial run before we head to Crescent next month. He had some trailer light issues so he didn't get on the road until after daylight and we finally got the boat launched around 9:00. Somehow he had his trolling motor batteries wired up wrong from putting in new batteries last week...Easy fix in just 2 minutes..Now the motor don't want to start and stay running and he noticed in wasn't peeing when it did run. Dirt dobbers has stopped up the line and with the help of a very small allen wrench it was peeing like a 5 year old kid. After running the motor a few minutes in neutral and warming the motor up, we were finally able to put it in gear and chug along. It spit and sputtered for a minute or 2 and then took off like a rocket and ran out good the rest of the day. Everything else worked out good but he is probably going to need a new starting battery before he puts it back in the water. He also is going to have to replace one of his trailer lights and he should be ready to roll next month.
Now for the fishing.....We started out in the Collins Branch area and ran the channel south towards the dam. We saw a few groups of fish but they were few and far between. The bite was slow but we managed to put a few in the boat. This is the area where the larger fish were caught at today. These 2 fish weighed in at 1.34 and 1.09 lbs:
We then went up the lake to north of Cedar Creek and fished the channel to just south of Cedar Creek and picked up a few smaller fish. The size or quantity wasn't there today but I think all the fresh water from earlier this week contributed to that. Bubblegum, Wildcat and Blue/Silver seemed to be all they would bite. We stopped fishing around 3:00. The water wasn't stained as bad as I was expecting until I got to the mouth of Cedar Creek. This picture shows what the water looked like coming out of Cedar Creek....
I only saw 2 other boats crappie fishing, a white Triton and I think they were trolling and a smaller blue boat minnow fishing around the Cedar Creek area. I talked with the 2 fellows in the Triton at the boat ramp when they were loading up and they seemed to have caught about the same amount or a few more than we did. All in all it was a beautiful day to be on the water and we know what it is gonna take to have my buddy's boat ready for Crescent.
