That's the best way to longline troll. The I pilot guides the way and you glance from time to time to make sure nothing is in front of you. I use a split screen with half GPS and the other sonar. This way I can follow my track right back over fish or structure. A side imager is only effective in a small window of speeds and it is better served when using the outboard.

I have a 500 series on the front of the boat for tight linning, hooked up to the minn Kota built in transducer, on my console I have my 798 si sd and I bought a extra power cord and an extention for the transducer, a friend gave me an old base so now I have the base mounted so I can hook up the extra cables and put the unit in the back cup holders on my Carolina Skiff when we troll for stripers or long line for crappie.

At the console to find an area and then at the bow to troll a selected area?
I tossed that idea around too. So many variables. Money, type boat, boat set up, where will anglers fish from in set up......................etc.

I ended up with 2 858c units. One on the transom for running or scouting, and one on the bow for fishing. My thoughts were I want to see the same thing from the console as the bow. There are many configurations of available units right now, enough to make a man say a few ugly words. Here is the simplest way to do it....................................well I typed a bunch of stuff and saw where I got way off topic......so I deleted it. Sorry, just not a simple quick answer here. Run what you can afford, or save up for what you want. Humminbird/Lowrance.....................doesn't matter other than initial $$ costs. Read the manuals, weed through the crap you read, and put some time in on the water for yourself with any unit you decide on.

All that said, buy a Humminbird with the biggest screen you can afford for console and bow when you can that has mapping and sonar/DI/SI or any combination.

Shinerunner pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have always been partial to Humminbirds and they are fantastic units. But I just ordered an Lowrance Elite 7 I'll be putting on the bow of my boat and the Humminbird 798 will be on my console. The initial cost is what made me go with a Lowrance unit this time. Going to be interesting to compare the 2 in action.

I can't answer that question until next week. I put my HB 798 on my console and installed the Elite 7 HDI on the front of my boat today. It will be Thursday at the earliest before I will have a chance to try it out, but I am expecting that it work just fine on the front.

Well......I tried out my new Elite 7 this past weekend...To make a long story short, my experience with it was not good at all. I think I may have even made up a couple of new cuss words. BUT, I am going to give Lowrance 1 more try so I can honestly say that I gave it an honest try. I am returning it and getting another Elite 7 to replace it with. Maybe I just had a defective unit so I'll find out this weekend how I am going to like it. But I will say the GPS did a pretty good job!!
