Hats off to you guys. Had been PM Jigslinger and GTOJoe on what to look for in prime docks to shoot as I wasn't getting the whole picture as far as water depths etc.
Went to Oconee this weekend. Just got home, camped at Lawrence shoals. Man everything I got is wet.
Anyway, shot docks a little yesterday evening. Caught probably 25 or so in a couple hours. First dock I shot was one Jigslinger told me to try and first shot I let it sink for 4 or 5 seconds and slowly reeled her in then all of the sudden BAM! I thought I done had me a 3 pound slab and she was gonna go on the wall. A couple minutes later when I finally got her in the boat it was a 3 or 4 pound largemouth. How that little 1/24oz jiffy jig stayed hooked in her I don't know.
Anyway, back to crappie. Every fish I caught were hand sized little dinks. Of course I threw them all back as 1 I like filets and 2 I figure the more little ones we release the more big ones we have in a couple years.
Boat traffic wasn't as bad as I have seen it before but those big cruiser boats with the walk through windshields get me to cussing every time. They like to drive by wide open and about 50 feet from you. Next thing you know you got a 4ft roller bouncing you into the dock. Think I will invest in an 8ft power pole one day to keep me put when I shoot a dock.
Later that evening we went to the timber near the dam and got set up to put the lights out. Fished by a tree in 40ft of water and caught a few dinks and threw back. Then a little after dark GA power sounded the alarms and stopped moving water. Then I caught nothing. The ones I did catch I caught about 8-10ft deep at the edge of the green light.
Weird thing was there was a guy about 50yds from me set up and he ran out of minnows and was fishing a hook under a cork about 2ft deep. However they were all small fish too and all of his went in the cooler. I tried shallower like he was doing but no bites. He must've been in the honey hole.
Overall had a good weekend. Did more riding the wife around in the boat than fishing. Managed to ride up Richland creek. Haven't been up through there since I was a kid with my dad. Place sure has changed.
Thanks Jigslinger and Coop. You guys put a new spark in me. This dock shooting is going to be another tactic in my arsenal from now on! While I still like my spider rigging you cant beat docks when they aint biting on the long rods.
