Night fishing

Ok my wife and I are planning to go camp down at Oconee this weekend and fish some early and late in the day but she is wanting to do some night fishing too. I am new to this so can some of you give me some pointers. Would you fish under a bridge or maybe tie up to a stump in the timber at sugar creek or down by the dam? I have 2 lights I was going to take. One is a cheap styrofoam halogen and the other is a little green LED tube about a foot long. Any certain water depths to be in and how deep should I usually fish to catch crappie? I have tried this several times and for some reason all I end up catching are catfish so I think I may be at wrong depth or wrong area. Do you fish directly under the lights or off to the side?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mtman on oconee there are a lot of docks that have lights. Fish the lights stay back from them and cast or shoot right up to the dock and slow roll your jig back to the boat the crappie will hang out all around there feeding on the bait fish. Go out during the day and look for docks with deep water in the 9 to 15 ft range and you should do well. Be careful at night the drunken water lice can be dangerous

We caught 30 or so keepers sat night. We were tied up to 2 stumps in timber, fishing about 12-15 deep in 24fow. We have the same floating green light but mine are 3-4 ft long and i run them off lawnmower batteries. Just minnow sinker and hook using floro line. Bite was strong up till 10-10:30 when they started moving water, then it slowed but still a fish or 2 every 10 -15 min. I was skeptical to go b/c of the "Super Moon" last sat night but it didnt really make a difference. Nite fishing will only get better as the summer goes on. I have luck under bridges too, but just like the timber better.

Never fished Oconee for crappie at night, but jugged for catfish alot. I would do the same as gtojoe's and fishy hand's replies suggested. Fish the docks that have lights or fish the timber. Just remember, if your in the timber and they start to generate/pump water, the current can get strong so position your boat with your lines accordingly to keep them from getting tangled. One last suggestion you might want to try, look on a topo map and find a steep point next to the main river channel in water 15'-20' range and fish that point. As far as lighting, I would use the brightest lights that I could find. I have never used the green LED lights, but some people swear by them. I prefer to use the coleman northstar lanterns. One of the things i like about the float led lights is they dont attract bugs in my face all night too! Last year mid summer i remember reading a post about a guy making float lights out of baby food jars and having lost of sucess too. Didnt sound too hard but i didnt try it. Good luck and be safe!
