For rivers or streams, I'd use spinners. Trout love 'em, and you can cover a lot of water.
Mepps, Panther Martin, and Blue Fox are all good. Try 1/32 oz or 1/16 oz. I don't think color is that important. I've caught trout on many different colors. Gold or bronze is good, though, and so is the Mepps Black Fury.
Check the regs for the water you're fishing. Some trout streams are single hook artificial only which means you'll have to cut off two of the treble hooks. (I do that anyway to cut down on snags.) It also means no live bait or bait substitutes, like Power Bait.
For ponds, marabou & chenille crappie jigs work well.
