Newborn Baby Survives 2 Hours In Dekalb Storm Drain

DECATUR - Dekalb police, searching for a newborn baby early Thursday, discovered it alive in a storm drain in the 3800 block of Grand Pines Drive.

The search began after an 18-year-old woman showed up at a Dekalb hospital and said she had just given birth. She said she put the baby in a trash can or dumpster near a service station on Wesley Chapel Road.

Dekalb Police spokesman Officer Jason Gagnon said police searched the area of the station and found nothing.

Police located the woman's boyfriend who eventually led police to a storm drain on Grand Pines Drive where the baby was recovered.

The baby was rushed to Children's Hospital where it is in serious but stable condition. Police said the baby had probably been in the drain two hours.

Police charged the boyfriend, 19-year-old Landis Stewart-Moore with cruelty to children. The mother who has not been identified, will also be charged, according to police.
