Default Not so new fisherman but new to Crappie slaying!

    Okay so here it goes....
I am a avid fisherman that grew up fishing for redfish and specks on the Texas coast but die to me being in the military I have had the oppurtunity to see this beautiful country we live in. I am have had some successful crappie trips in my day but I have always gone with someone who knows what they're doing. I am asking for any advice on how to have successful trips when I go out on my own. I fish out of a kayak and currently live in Virginia so I have done a little research on lakes/rivers around me. I know structure and water temperature is extremely important and I am in the process of getting a fishfinder for my yak. If anyone has any advice on what to look for please let me know. Also I am fishing with two light spinning rods with 6lb test but have no idea what is considered about lures/jigs. I just want to make sure I'm spending my money wisely on the proper gear. My family and I love eating these little fish so again any help would be appreciated. If anyone in the Central Va area wants anyone to tag along to do a little crappie slayin let me know. Thanks for your help!!

Welcome tot he site. Not to familiar with the crappie holes up that way even though I lived in Chesapeake for around nine years. Kinda hard to catch fish running 18 wheels everywhere but home. But I'm sure one of them guys up there will chime in soon. You might also try the Virginia board located under the general forum listings. Good luck on finding the spots up there and tight lines. Be sure to post some pic.'s of the catch too. Once again, welcome.

I was stationed in Fort Eustis, VA while I was on active duty. Didn't know much about crappie fishing at the time but looking back I remember catching a ton of them in a hidden creek near the golf course if your ever around there. Then you've also got the James river, tons of cats over 30 pounds, and I know I've seen crappie tournament signs at one of the launches. Just be warned, there isn't much clean water in VA, PCB signs everywhere.
