Tips for finding the crappie while fishing from shore

Hey guys, new to hardcore crappie fishing since last year. Normally just caught them when using smaller bass lures never actually spent time going after them lol. I'm not exactly horrible at catching them I know the basics. I Just wanted to know if there were ways to locate them, to know whether or not they are running deep or shallow. What do I look for? I can catch my limit for two or. Three days in a row then boom! Not one! I don't have a boat and Have several lakes to access some days I just can't find them. Any advice is gratefully appreciated thanks!
