Thanks! Had no idea they did fly tying classes every month at Cabelas and BassPro...that's pretty exciting.
A 4 wt rod is not a bass rod. You need at least a 6 weight and even heaver for larger weighted flys. However fly fishing was designed to cast a line and a fly goes along for the ride. If anything you should put a lighter weight line on a rod when using flys with weight. Rod weight depends on line weight with no fly weight. By adding fly weight reduces the line size or weight. Like balancing a see saw. Also poppers and such has poor airodynamics reducing smooth casting. I can assure you yo uwill be much better off with a stiffer heaver weight rod for your bass fishing.
think of fly rods as golf clubs or the dozen rods a bass tournament angler uses.they all have a niche.the niche can overlap some but all gear has it's limits.not gonna throw a big crankbait on my UL spinning rod i use for small crappie jigs.Attachment 231158 this is what i will be chasing pond bass and for weighted panfish flies at some distance.will probably use two different lines for this. a heavy bass bug taper and a standard weight forward.
