Pat I spent 68 days fishing last year 30 of those days were spent chasing Atlantic Salmon with a fly rod through out the Maritimes of Canada in those 30 days I landed over forty Salmon up to 48 inches long and up to 30 pounds. The other 38 days I spent chasing Black Crappie and I can tell this much these Crappie can drive a man to drink. In the 38 days of Crappie fishing I caught a lot Small mouth bass up to 4 pounds but only I only got into the Crappie 4 times one time we got into 36 huge Crappie in one hour these fish were all 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pound. I have no problem finding the Crappie I can mark pods of fish suspended in this river that has some holes in it that are 40 feet deep. Getting them to take is left for a lot of serious discussion. I have to agree with QK, I have started catching farm pond crappie on a slumpbuster. I caught a 12 crappie out of a 3/4 acre farm pond on a rubber legged slumpbuster. I would have caught more, but I was broken off on a thump of the line.
I did well in mid December, or... before the first ice over. I used a sinking line, and or heavy fly and got down about 10 feet with a flashy minnow imitation.
I have fly fished for crappies many times and done quite well with a marabou streamers early spring and throughout the summer months. Most of my fish were about 1 to 2 feet under the surface is crappie sometimes go on a feeding frenzy you will see little dimples on the water. This is a good time to catch many types of panfish as when there are feeding on the surface they attract other fish like bluegill in bass so be prepared for action. This is a simple pattern that I've used for them in the past, using a size 8 hook we would start out with a piece of red either.feather or something that was read entire it on for a tale wrapped the body with yellow Chanel underneath the I would be a other small piece of red feather for the streamer part behind the eye of the hook white marabou . This was a killer pattern when I was a kid in high school which you believe in 1964. Good luck with it.
