That what you do New Year’s Day you will do all year long. Don’t know if that’s true but I wasn’t taking any chances. Sunrise found me at Mosquito Lagoon dropping the boat in to see what I could find.
The wind was supposed to build up to 12 to 15 mph and I wasn’t looking forward to that but the temperature was perfect. I threw a topwater for about twenty minutes hoping that was working but it was not. So I fired the outboard and headed to where I could hide from the wind and find a few fish. Found a nice little redfish by the tip of a downwind point. I was smiling big right about then.
A few casts later, the first snooklet came to visit. Just like the big ones, just smaller.
Trying to manage the boat and stay out the stronger winds was kinda tough sometimes but overall it wasn’t bad. I spent a lot of time pitching under the mangroves and I got good hit from what I think was a good snook but I’ll never know. The line came tight after the hit, the drag slipped and the water boiled and a second later, the line broke. Would’ve been fun. Coming back home was pretty bumpy. Couldn’t make but 6 to 8 mph but it didn’t last but a few minutes and then closer to the upwind side it settled down. I finished the day with another redfish that was a little bigger than the first. Also got a total of 9 small Snook which is promising for the upcoming year. One hitch in that is that they do not do cold water very well. They’re more tropical and when it gets too cold for too long they go belly up and few survive. We’ve got a cold system coming next week that I hope blows through before long. Here’s a couple more pics and I’ll leave you with wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. Til next time…….Skeet.

Good to see you back Danny. More snook over there than I’ve ever known there to be, still can’t keep ‘em though. I’m taking a real light rod along next time with a 2” curl tail and see if they like that too. Hope you’re doing well and chasin them shrimp around. I’m still not set up. Crappie are bitin on Harney. You know where to look for em. Don’t be such a stranger……Tim
