Shell Creek Charlotte County
I'm relatively new to the area and am wondering about Shell Creek near Punta Gorda as a crappie fishery. I'm referring to the fresh water section above the dam, of course. I've made a couple trips there over the past few weeks and have caught smallish bluegill and bass but no crappie. I've heard that there are crappie in there but wanted to get some other opinions about it. Not looking for spots, just a feel for what to expect. Thanks folks!

I've have bass fished that Creek a few times never did real good. It's a beautiful Creek. I pm a guy that used to be on Capt Mel site. He moved to that area it it became his home fishing grounds. If he answers I'll try to hook you up with him. I'd like to know also. It's too pretty not to fish and I live 20 mins away.

Also Fishing Frank's bait shop in Charlotte Harbor does a fantastic job sharing local fishing information. He does a lot of salt water but has posted some info on fresh water. He posts a weekly Fishing report on his website and has a radio podcast. You can call the store and I'm sure we would answer your questions. He mentions the fresh water canals around Port Charlotte for crappie. Nine Mile canal that runs from Port Charlotte to North Port is one of the largest fresh water canals in our area. I've always wanted to try crappie there but have not done so yet. Just Google fishing Frank's. A great guy, loves to fish, offers a great service to our community. Don't think he sells minows. I get mine in just off Hwy 17 about 12 miles or so north of Washington Loop.
