You all know that I haven’t been fishin in a coons age, and many times longer than that to get out with my bestest fishin buddy Camryn. Both came together this morning. Had a lot of options with several close by, but went to where I knew we could hide from the wind and have fun. That we did. A short trip through some areas that let us knock the rust off, and here came the wind. One area that usually works well couldn’t be fished for the wind. The tiny rigs get blown around easily making casting tough. I should have kept the Warmouth today. They were active and I got one that was a pound plus and 3 fingers wide. I couldn’t control him at all in the early going. No less than ten that were fillet size went through the boat today, and that would have been an outstanding meal. The majority of the crappie we caught today were males all dressed for the dance but we never boated a swollen female. Looked for them nearby but didn’t find any. Camryn has one male that would have passed the pound mark easy that was super dark, and she had never seen them like that. Said it looked scary dark.
The weather was comfortable and the windbreakers had come off shortly after the ride in, and the sweatshirts made the distance but it was hot. At one point I saw movement in the water and called to Cam to look. There was a turtle rising until it saw us that had a head very close to the size of my clenched fist, biggest I’ve ever seen in fresh water. Never cleared the surface and moved off. The usual serenade was there with the owls talking back and forth, and the limpkins screeching. This must be an area that works for the young gar for some reason as we caught half a dozen of them just over a foot long. Copper nose bluegill, Warmouth, Crappie and gar were caught today but we never boated a LMB or Redbelly like I normally do. Come to think of it, never saw a shell cracker either. A great trip, done by noon and a quick pizza for lunch across the street from the house. I’ve missed the time that she and I used to get more of, being 14 and active in school means I have to share. Thanks for coming along and I hope to write of another of our trips real soon. Until then be careful and enjoy what time you get......Skeet.
